Are You Hiding Behind A Mask?

Halloween is such a fun time for everyone, including adults. Picking out just the right costume for the festivities allows us to become a super hero, a famous movie star, our favorite animated character, and to just be something other than who we really are in our day to day life. Oh, and we get to eat lots and lots of candy with no guilt or shame! And then there are the horror movies and haunted houses that provide an adrenaline rush as well as an escape from reality for thrill seekers of all ages. It is also an occasion that allows our creative side to shine through with pumpkin carvings, elaborate decorations, face paintings, and so much more.

Do you find yourself wearing a mask all year long? When someone asks you how you are doing, do you say, "I'm okay" even when you're not? I understand! I used to do the same thing because I thought it was easier to hold everything inside. It seemed to be a safe way to avoid conflict, criticism, and judgement from others. However, when we respond like this, anxiety and loneliness begin to creep in and before long, negativity takes the place of positivity in all areas of our lives. Why? Because we are not always "okay".

It's okay to not be "okay" and it's time to take off the mask and let the real you shine through!

Tell your closest friends what you are struggling with and let them know you don't expect them to fix this for you. You simply need them to let you vent. And when they are going through something difficult, you do the same for them. I have discovered that when I am transparent and real, other people begin to take off their masks too. It is exhilarating to be free to be me!

You can't please everyone, nor can you control anyone, and when you can lean on a friend in times of trouble they can help you see the light at the end of the tunnel. They can help you see the blue skies and together you can celebrate brighter days.

I believe in the power of prayer and in God's word there is a passage, among many others, that says, to cast all your anxiety on Him because he cares for you. (1 Peter 5:7). Friends that pray together stay together.
