A Victim of Neglect

Saint Augustine, Florida is the oldest city in the United States. In 1565, the Spanish established a colony there, creating the first port city on the North American mainland, which has survived the test of time.

I had the privilege of living in this historical city as a teenager.

In 1824, a tower and beacon became Florida's first official lighthouse. In front of the lighthouse was a two-story brick home for the light keepers and their families to occupy. In the 1960s there was no longer a need for a light keeper, and the two-story home was vacated. It slowly became a victim of neglect.

In 1980, a remarkable group of women began a massive restoration project to save the historic home. The lighthouse itself shone brightly to protect and guide ships, but the structure around it was falling apart.

If you were to visit Saint Augustine, today, you could see the lighthouse still shining brightly. You could also see the once abandoned house, now rebuilt and surrounded by beautiful gardens. It is lovingly maintained by volunteers.

I have several friends who collect lighthouses. One of the things I learned from them is that all lighthouses are different. The mariners establish their locations by these differences. They each have a Daymark and a Nightmark. There are unique colors and patterns that allow mariners to establish their location during both day and night.

Saint Augustine's Daymark is black and white spiral stripes with a red lantern. Another distinction is the flash pattern for the nightime positioning. The Nightmark for this lighthouse is a 30-second fixed flash.

There are those around us who once seemed full of life, but now seem empty inside. What happened? Are they victims of neglect?

In this world of darkness and fear, we can serve as a beacon that points others to the Light of the World.

Just like the uniqueness of lighthouses, we all have differences. Why not use the unique gifts and abilities God has given to you to make a positive difference in the lives of others?

If you see someone in need of a friend, don't be afraid to take the first step. A simple "hello" and a smile is a good place to start.

Another step you can take is to find a way to compliment them. My mother always says, "If you look hard enough, you will find good in everyone."

Be consistent and treat everyone the same.

Be genuine and sincere.

Remember where you came from - without the grace of God we would all be lost and floundering in the dark.
