"Someday is not a day of the week."
Do you find yourself putting things off until the last minute? Or are you the kind of person that plans to get to that project "someday", only to realize "someday" has come and gone?
You're not alone.
There are many reasons why we put things off. Here are some common ones:
We don't feel like doing the thing that needs to be done.
We're tired, and it impacts our drive to get things done.
We get easily distracted and start something else before finishing what we started.
We've tried before, and it didn't go well.
We're afraid we might not get it right.
We don't want to miss out on doing what everyone else is doing.
We might look dumb.
We like things the way they are.
We don't want to change.
The reasons listed above are often mislabeled as laziness. In reality, they stem from competing interests, uncertainty, social judgment, and a formed habit of putting things off until the last minute.
I've heard it said that procrastination is fear-based:
Rejection.
Change.
The Unknown.
Imperfection.
Disappointment.
Overwhelmed.
I want to encourage you to write down 3 things in your journal that you have been putting off.
Then, take a look at the activities of your day:
What things could you let go of?
Are you spending lots of time scrolling on social media instead of working on things that really matter?
Are you afraid to step out with something new because you're worried about how someone might react?
Are you afraid of failure?
Do you have too many things on your plate?
Next, write down the things that matter most to you. Getting clear about what's most important in your life will allow you to clear your mind and allow you to get your priorities in order.
It's possible that you aren't really procrastinating after all. You just need to simplify.
These steps will help you gain the confidence to move forward and the clarity to shine.
